All you need to know about SAT

Are you an international student that is done with secondary education or college? Are you looking forward to undergoing an undergraduate degree or study abroad? Have you heard of SAT? This article is for you. Chances are that you may have heard about SAT, but may not know what it really means. Do not worry. In today’s article, I shall be taking you through the rudiment of what SAT is really about.

What is SAT?

SAT stands for scholastic Assessment Test. It is a standardized test administered by the College Board. The exam is meant for specific set of students who wants to travel abroad for study. These set of students are the ones seeking admission to undergraduate schools oversees. The Scholastic Assessment Test was formally known as Scholastic Aptitude Test. SATs tests its candidates in three academic categories which includes; written, verbal and mathematical skills. SAT is a pencil-paper test taken by those who aspire to pursue undergraduate courses, particularly in the US and Canada are required to take the SAT exam.

You need to understand that the US is very particular when it comes to the SAT tests. Most of the colleges in the US ensures SAT is taken in order to get admission to qualify for their undergraduate courses. SAT can also be funded, as many schools offer SAT scholarships to students who perform excellently well in the SAT tests. So, as an international student that hopes to study abroad, especially in one of the schools in the US, you already know that the SAT is compulsory and scholarships are being granted to students who do well. I believe you would want to be a scholarship beneficiary. So, you have to utilize it to your own benefit.

Who runs SAT?

The SAT is as an examination body solely owned, made and published by the College Board. It is a private and nonprofit organization in the United States that is administered on behalf of the College Board by the Educational Testing Service, which until recently, developed the SAT as well. The test is intended to determine the students’ readiness for college. The College Board  states that the SAT, as well as the high school grade point average (GPA), serves as a better reference point of success in college than high school grades alone, as calculated by college freshman GPA. Several researches conducted on SAT shows that, there is a statistically significant increase in correlation of high school grades and college freshman grades when the SAT is factored in.

History of SAT

According to history, SAT was used more by students residing in coastal states, while the ACT was used widely by students in the Midwest and South; recently, a huge number of students on the East and West coasts have been taking the ACT. Since 2007, all year four colleges and universities in the United States that require a test as a criteria for admission will accept either the SAT or ACT, and as of 2022, over 1400 four-year colleges and universities do not require any standardized test scores at all for admission, though some of them are applying this policy only temporarily due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Latest Update about SAT

An announcement by the SAT College Board has it that SAT exam will be carried out online, beginning from 2023, and will last for just two hours, instead of the present three hours. Candidates may also be allowed to use a calculator for the math section of the exam. “The digital SAT will be easier to take, easier to give, and more relevant,” said Priscilla Rodriguez, Vice President, College Readiness Assessments (PSAT & SAT) at The College Board. International students will be able to give the digital SAT test from early 2023 and US high school students will be able to give it from 2024. Currently, students use a pencil to fill in the bubbles on a multiple-choice answer sheet. With the Digital SAT test, students will get scores in days instead of weeks.

 

Structure of SAT

 Reading Test

The SAT test for Reading has one section of 52 questions, and a time limit of 65 minutes. All the questions are multiple-choice based, where students are expected to read certain passages.  The passages may include Tables, graphs, and charts; but are definitely not mathematical questions. There are five passages on the Reading Test and 10-11 questions per passage or passage pair. SAT Reading passages are gotten from three main fields of knowledge or study, which includes:  History, Social studies, and Science. Each SAT Reading Test always includes: one passage from U.S. or world literature; one passage from either a U.S. founding document or a related text; one passage about economics, psychology, sociology, or another social science; and, two science passages. Answers to all of the questions are based only on the content stated in or implied by the passage or passage pair.

 Writing and Language Test

The Writing and Language Test of the SAT is made up of one section with 44 multiple-choice questions and a time limit of 35 minutes. The skills being evaluated include: increasing the clarity of argument; improving word choice; improving analysis of topics in social studies and science; changing sentence or word structure to increase organizational quality and impact of writing; and, fixing or improving sentence structure, word usage, and punctuation.

 Mathematics Test

The mathematics SAT test is 80 minutes long and includes 58 questions. It is divided into calculator used questions and questions you are not allowed to use calculators.

 

Number of times to take the exam

Firstly, you have to bear in mind that SAT is carried out 5 times a year in Nigeria. The test is usually comes up in the months of March, May, August, October, and December. You can take as many times as you want. There is no limited number of time one should take it.

 

SAT centers

There are lots of centers that prepares and register candidates for SAT examinations wherever you are. In Nigeria for instance, one great center that has great success record is Light Heights International education Agency, that helps students who wants to travel abroad.
